Queensland News
The last few months the CENA Queensland Branch Committee have been working hard to obtain some significant outcomes for emergency nursing in Queensland.

Since the events of Bundaberg, the Queensland Public Hospitals Commission of Inquiry and the Review of Queensland’s Health Services were undertaken. Since the release of these reports there has been some major restructuring and changes to Queensland Health. Emergency Departments have been a focus of change and emergency nurses around Queensland had been expressing their concern of the apparent lack of nursing input into these changes.

This is certainly not the case since the meeting CENA (Qld Branch) held with the Premier, the Honourable Mr Peter Beattie, the Honourable Stephen Robertson, Minister for Health and Ms Uschi Schreiber, Director-General Health at Parliament House on 16 February 2006. The Premier, Minister for Health and Director-General were very positive to what we presented and were open in their responses to changes occurring within Queensland Health. A lot of solutions we presented, to varying degrees, were already at various stages of implementation.

One of the major concerns expressed was the lack of nursing input in the Clinical Networks being developed at the time. As a result of the meeting, a concerted effort was made to ensure the invitations already made to nursing staff to participate in this process were resent via a more direct route. As a result there is nursing representation on the ED Clinical Networks and any sub-committees. The three Area Health Service Networks in Queensland are at various stages of development and priortisation of their staffing needs and critical areas needing immediate attention. You could say it is an exciting time to be an emergency nurse especially if you are also working within Qld Health.
View Brief to the Premier

ACEM (Qld) and CENA (Qld) Symposium
The recent event for CENA (Qld Branch) was the joint ACEM (Qld) and CENA (Qld) Symposium held at Seaworld Nara Resort on Friday and Saturday 28 & 29 April 2006. This was a great opportunity for CENA to collaborate with our medical counterparts and the symposium was enjoyed by all. It was a great opportunity to allow the Emergency Medicine Registrars to showcase their 4-10 papers. This symposium will become an annual event for ACEM (Qld) & CENA (Qld Branch) and as soon as we have more details we will let you know.

Trauma Plan for Queensland
The final thing we would like to share with you is that the draft ‘Trauma Plan for Queensland’, which CENA participated in the development of through the consultative process, has been finalised and has been presented to the Queensland Emergency Medical Systems Advisory Committee. The next step is to present it to the Director-General for endorsement. As soon as this has occurred and the document is finalised we will let you know where you can access it.
